So you want to build your own computer? That's great! Too make things easier its best to follow these simple guidelines.
1. A workstation with plenty of room and good lighting. Whatever you decide to use make sure you line it with newspaper if you want to avoid scratches. PC cases and their components have sharp metal points and can easily scratch a table. Make sure you have adequate lighting. A desk lamp would be great as you can adjust it towards the part of the case you are working in.
2. Don't try and build your computer before you have all the parts. It's very easy to forget essential parts of the system. You may wonder why your PC is not working only to find you have skipped a simple cable. So make sure you have all the components and manuals.
3. Take care when handling the components for your PC. All components come in anti-static packaging. Keep them in that packaging when you're not using them. It is very easy to blow some components with static electricity. Especially memory modules.
4. Be gentle with the components. If you can't get it to fit, take it out and check the manual again to make sure you are putting it in the right place. All components can only go in one way.
5. Take the time to read the manuals provided for each component before trying to install. This can save you a lot of time in the long run.
6. Don't throw away your packaging and receipts. In rare occasions you may have a faulty item so you will need these to return it for a replacement. The same applies when you upgrade your components. It will make it much easier to sell again.
7. A lot of components come with extra screws and cables that you will not need. Store them in a "spare parts" container. You will be surprised at how often you will need these in the future.
8. A magnetic screwdriver is a great tool to have. You wont believe how many times you'll drop a screw in a hard to reach place.
9. Check all the connections for all cables after assembly. Its very easy to work a cable loose when working on a different component.
A lot of people are worried about breaking things during the first PC assembly. Just take care and follow these guidelines. Most importantly, enjoy the process!
